Residential
Life
Residential children can stay at the school four nights a
week (Mon-Fri) during the term time. The "family units" have
been designed and refurbished to provide bright, homely and
practical accommodation for visually impaired children with
other disabilities.
The children
live in small family groups of 4 or 5 children with two or
three houseparents, depending on the needs of the children.
Each
unit has a large sitting room, kitchen/dining area, 2 bathrooms
and individual bedrooms.
The children
are encouraged to personalise their bedroom with pictures,
posters, photographs and toys. Most of the children have tape
recorders and enjoy listening to their favourite music or
story tapes at bedtime or during the evening.
Following
the end of the school day, there are a number of extra-curricular
activities for the children. After tea the children enjoy
using local facilities including the sports centre or going
to youth club where they can meet new friends.
Eating out
is a great favourite for most of the children and they enjoy
visits to local cafes and restaurants. The school is situated
very close to the local shops. The children like to spend their
pocket money on treats or choose their own toiletries.
Children
are cared for by experienced houseparents who work together
with teachers and therapists to ensure continuity of education
and good child care practice.
